When two people in a relationship both struggle with drugs or alcohol, addiction affects not only each person but the relationship itself. Substance use can become woven into daily routines, communication, and even the way a couple spends time together. In these situations, one partner’s recovery can be difficult to maintain if the other continues to use. Couples rehab at Highwater Detox gives partners the opportunity to begin recovery together, in our private, co-ed facility in Granada Hills, near Los Angeles, California.
Why Couples Choose to Recover Together
Many couples delay treatment because neither partner wants to leave the other behind. Some worry about being separated during a stressful time, while others fear that one partner will continue using at home. Our couples rehab program removes those barriers. Both partners can be admitted to Highwater Detox, often on the same day, and go through detox and residential rehab at the same time, with support from a clinical team available 24/7.
Individualized Care for Each Partner
Couples rehab does not mean both partners receive identical treatment. Every person’s relationship with substances is different, and so are their health needs, histories, and goals. Each partner receives a thorough assessment and an individualized treatment plan. One partner may need a longer detox or a different approach to therapy than the other, and our team adjusts care for each person as they progress.
Detox and Residential Rehab for Couples
Treatment usually begins with medically supervised detox, which typically lasts 5 to 11 days depending on the substance and each partner’s health. When clinically appropriate, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) helps ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings. After detox, partners can continue into residential rehab, with programs available in 7, 30, 60, or 90-day lengths. Partners do not have to choose the same length of stay, and our team will recommend what is right for each person.
Therapy and Counseling in Couples Rehab
During residential rehab, each partner participates in individual therapy to work on their own personal challenges and recovery goals. Group therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) help both partners build skills for managing thoughts, emotions, and stress without substances. DBT’s focus on interpersonal effectiveness can be especially valuable for couples learning new ways to communicate and resolve conflict.
Building a Shared Relapse Prevention Plan
Addiction counseling helps partners recognize shared triggers, such as social settings, routines, or conflicts that once led to substance use. Together with their counselors, couples can develop a joint relapse prevention plan and learn how to support each other’s sobriety after treatment. Rebuilding trust and healthy communication is an important part of the process, and recovering side by side allows couples to practice these skills in a safe, supervised environment.
Amenities and Holistic Care for Couples
Couples at Highwater Detox also benefit from our holistic approach to treatment. Yoga classes, massage therapy, spa procedures, a fitness studio, and outdoor excursions support physical and emotional health. Freshly prepared gourmet meals accommodate all dietary restrictions, and patients can choose individualized or shared rooms depending on their needs. On a case-by-case basis, cell phones, computers, and internet access are allowed, helping couples manage responsibilities at home.
Dual Diagnosis and Pet-Friendly Options
If either partner is also living with a mental health disorder, integrated co-occurring disorders treatment is included in their plan. Couples who share a pet can also take advantage of our pet-friendly rehab option, keeping the whole family together during treatment.
