Medication Assisted Treatment, commonly known as MAT, is an evidence-based approach to addiction treatment that combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapy. MAT recognizes that addiction affects the brain and body, and that medication can play an important role in helping people withdraw safely, manage cravings, and stay engaged in recovery. At Highwater Detox, MAT is available as part of our medically supervised detox and residential rehab programs at our private facility near Los Angeles, California.
How MAT Works
When a person becomes physically dependent on alcohol or opioids, the brain adapts to the presence of the substance. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms and intense cravings that make recovery extremely difficult. Medications used in MAT work by easing these symptoms and reducing cravings, which helps stabilize brain chemistry. This allows patients to focus on therapy and the deeper work of recovery rather than being overwhelmed by physical discomfort.
MAT Is Always Combined With Therapy
MAT is not a replacement for therapy, and it is not simply trading one substance for another. When used as prescribed and under medical supervision, these medications help people function, think clearly, and participate fully in treatment. At Highwater Detox, MAT is always combined with other services, including individual therapy, group therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and addiction counseling. This whole-person approach addresses both the physical and psychological sides of addiction.
Who Can Benefit From MAT?
MAT is most commonly used for alcohol and opioid addiction, including heroin and prescription painkillers. During detox, it can make withdrawal safer and more comfortable and increase the likelihood that patients complete detox. Detox at Highwater Detox typically lasts 5 to 11 days depending on the substance, and MAT is one of the tools our medical team uses to support patients through this critical stage.
Individual Assessment Before Treatment
Every patient at Highwater Detox receives an individual assessment before any medication is prescribed. Our medical team reviews each patient’s substance use history, overall health, current medications, and any co-occurring mental health disorder. If MAT is clinically appropriate, it becomes part of an individualized treatment plan, and our team monitors each patient’s response closely, adjusting care as needed. Not every patient requires MAT, and decisions are always made with the patient’s safety and goals in mind.
MAT With 24/7 Medical Supervision
Because our clinical staff are available 24/7, patients receiving MAT benefit from constant monitoring and support. Any side effects or changes in symptoms can be addressed quickly. This level of supervision is one of the major advantages of receiving MAT in an inpatient setting, especially during the early days of recovery when the body is adjusting.
MAT in Residential Rehab
MAT can also continue into residential rehab, where it helps patients manage ongoing cravings while they build new skills and habits. Residential programs at Highwater Detox are available in 7, 30, 60, or 90-day lengths. As patients progress, our medical team discusses the role of medication in their long-term recovery and helps them plan for continued care after treatment.
Benefits of Medication Assisted Treatment
Research and clinical experience show that combining medication with therapy can improve outcomes for many people with alcohol and opioid addiction. MAT helps reduce the risk of relapse, supports patients in staying in treatment, and gives them a stronger foundation for recovery. Most importantly, it can help people reclaim their health, relationships, and daily lives.
