Addiction counseling is a central part of treatment at Highwater Detox. While therapy explores the thoughts, emotions, and experiences behind substance use, addiction counseling focuses on the practical side of recovery: understanding how addiction works, recognizing personal risks, and developing a clear plan for staying sober. Our counselors work with patients throughout detox and residential rehab at our private facility near Los Angeles, California.
Understanding Addiction
Many people enter treatment with questions about addiction and recovery. Why is it so hard to stop? What happens to the brain and body during addiction? How can cravings be managed? Addiction counseling provides clear, honest answers. Understanding addiction as a treatable health condition, rather than a personal failure, helps many patients let go of shame and feel more hopeful about the future.
Identifying Triggers
A key focus of addiction counseling is identifying triggers. Triggers are people, places, emotions, and situations that increase the urge to use. They may include stress, conflict, loneliness, certain social settings, or even specific times of day. Counselors help patients recognize their own triggers and develop strategies to avoid or cope with them. This work lays the foundation for an effective relapse prevention plan.
Relapse Prevention Planning
Relapse prevention is one of the most important goals of addiction counseling. Patients learn to recognize early warning signs that they may be at risk, such as changes in mood, skipping healthy routines, or romanticizing past substance use. They practice coping skills, identify supportive people they can reach out to, and create a written plan for what to do if cravings become strong. This preparation gives patients confidence as they move toward life after treatment.
Planning for Life After Treatment
Addiction counseling also helps patients set realistic goals and plan for the future. Counselors may discuss topics such as rebuilding routines, returning to work, managing finances, repairing relationships, and creating a home environment that supports sobriety. For patients in our couples rehab program, counseling can help partners understand shared triggers and create a joint plan for staying sober together.
Addiction Counseling at Highwater Detox
At Highwater Detox, addiction counseling is tailored to each patient as part of an individualized treatment plan. Counseling begins as soon as patients are stable during medically supervised detox, which typically lasts 5 to 11 days, and continues throughout residential rehab, available in 7, 30, 60, or 90-day programs. Our counselors address the specific substances each patient has used, including alcohol, opioids, heroin, cocaine, and prescription drugs.
Counseling and Other Services
Addiction counseling works closely with our other services. Individual therapy and group therapy provide space for emotional healing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) teach skills for managing thoughts and emotions, and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) helps manage cravings when clinically appropriate. For patients with co-occurring disorders, counseling also addresses how mental health symptoms can act as triggers.
Compassionate, Experienced Counselors
Our counselors bring compassion, experience, and a nonjudgmental approach to every session. They understand that recovery is a process, and they support patients through challenges and successes alike. With clinical staff available 24/7 and more than 100 years of cumulative experience across our team, patients always have someone to turn to.
